Veteran third base coach will not join Red Sox coaching staff
There was speculation that former big league infielder and veteran third base coach Joey Cora could join his brother Alex Cora in Boston.
“Joey Cora, the Mets’ third base coach in 2022 and ’23, has drawn interest for several coaching positions around the league”, per Andy Martino of SNY.
That will not be the case. Cora is expected to leave the Mets and join another organization, according to his brother.
Boston is in need of a new third base coach following the dismissal of Carlos Febles at the end of the season.
Febles had been a member of the Red Sox organization since 2007 and part of the major league coaching staff since Nov. 2017. Over the last six seasons, Febles has worked with the team’s infielders on defense.
As a player, Cora spent 11 seasons in the bigs with the Padres, Mariners, White Sox and Cleveland. He was more successful as a player with the Mariners, where he played from 1995-1998. Cora was part of the Mariners 1995 and 1997 playoff runs.
Cora was an All-Star in 1997, he was a .277 career hitter. He popped 30 career homers, drove in 294 runs and he also stole 117 bases.
