Trevor Story with ‘significant’ injury; placed on injured list
The Red Sox learned that the MRI on shortstop Trevor Story revealed he has a subluxation of his left shoulder. Story was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday and will have another doctor’s appointment in Boston on Monday to determine whether he’ll need surgery to address the injury.
Story hopes he can play again this coming season, but he also recognizes he just doesn’t know what’s next for him.
“I think we’ll be in a much better position on Monday to provide some answers to those questions,” Craig Breslow said to reporters pregame in Anaheim.
A somber Story spoke with the media following the Red Sox’ 2-1 loss to the Angels on Saturday night.
“Still trying to gather all the information, all the opinions from everybody involved,” Story said. “It’s a significant injury. But yeah, I think we’re kind of waiting to diagnose it when we get all the opinions.”
Story injured his left shoulder diving for a Mike Trout ground ball on Friday night. . He called the injury “kind of a freak thing.”
“Just frustrating,” Story said. “Just not fun, man. Not fun getting injured.”
This is not the first time a member of the Red Sox has dealt with a shoulder subluxation injury. In 2006, then-closer Jonathan Papelbon suffered one Sept. 1, but suffered no labrum damage. He was able to resume throwing by the end of the month, had a healthy and successful offseason, and it was never again an issue.
Jacoby Ellsbury suffered an early-season shoulder subluxation in 2012. He didn’t require surgery, but he missed three months of action. Last season, outfield prospect Miguel Bleis suffered the same injury but needed surgery and missed the entire 2023 season.
Not all of these injuries are the same, and each player and their timelines will be different. Judging by Story’s postgame demeanor and comments, he’s expecting the worst outcome.
The 31-year-old shortstop went 7-for-31 (.226) with three doubles in eight games. Boston recalled infielder David Hamilton from the WooSox to replace Story on the 26-man roster.
