WooSox infielder David Hamilton headed Anaheim to meet the Red Sox; team still waiting on Trevor Story MRI results
As the Red Sox await the results of the MRI for injured shortstop Trevor Story, the club has infielder WooSox infielder David Hamilton en route to Anaheim to meet the team, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. Assuming Story lands on the injured list, Hamilton will replace him on the 26-man roster.
Through the first six games with the WooSox, Hamilton has posted a .167 batting average with two homers, two RBIs, three runs, and an .750 OPS. The speedy Hamilton has yet to swipe a bag to begin the new baseball season. He owns 179 career stolen bases between the Brewers and Red Sox organizations.
Hamilton will provide the Red Sox with some insurance for the remainder of the weekend as they figure out the next steps regarding Story.
The two-time All-Star injured his left shoulder on Friday night while attempting to make a diving play on a Mike Trout grounder to shortstop.
Story dove to his right to attempt to make a phenomenal play in the fourth inning. He was able to glove the ball, but he landed on his left arm and was immediately in pain on the outfield grass.
"Obviously, did something to the shoulder there. Pretty painful,” a frustrated Story said postgame to reporters. “We didn’t get images yet. So we’ll have that tomorrow. I’m not trying to put any words on it yet because we don’t know for sure. So yeah, painful. Just kind of landed on the body weight on the shoulder there.
“We’re refraining from kind of diagnosing it right now until we get more information tomorrow,” he added.
Hamilton had his first cup of coffee in the majors last season; he appeared in 15 games and batted .121 (4-for-33) with two doubles and a .438 OPS. While with the Red Sox, he split time at second base (two games) and shortstop (13 games), making two errors.
