Top prospect Marcelo Mayer begins baseball activities, not game-ready yet
Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Mayer has been on the injured list since the beginning of August with left shoulder inflammation. The injury is not considered to be serious.
Prior to the IL-stint, Mayer was amidst a 1-for-21 slump (.048) with 12 strikeouts. He went 0-for-5 in his last game with the Sea Dogs before the injury.
Mayer has now begun baseball activities as he ramps back up to rejoin the Sea Dogs, but he is not yet game ready, according to the Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams.
The 20-year-old has struggled offensively since his promotion to Double-A back at the end of May. The top ranked Sox prospect has scorching hot for the Greenville Drive, hitting .290/.366/.524 line with seven homers and an .890 OPS in 35 games.
Mayer has hit just .189 with six homers, 20 RBI and a .609 OPS with the Sea Dogs. He has also struck out 49 times while working 15 walks.
