Ever since being sent back down to Worcester before his July 28th outing, Brandon Walter has been spectacular on the mound for the WooSox.
In his five outings since being sent back down, Walter has only allowed 3 runs over 18.1 innings pitched. He threw 77 pitches in his last start, which is the most since being optioned due to his bullpen role in Boston. WooSox manager Chad Tracy mentioned they would need to stretch him back out in a starter role, even if Boston would only use him as a reliever if called upon again this season.
In the month of August so far, Triple-A opponents are hitting .211 off of him. He is carrying a 1.10 ERA for the month as well. It is a complete change than earlier in the season, when Walter had a 4.74 ERA in April, 9.00 ERA in May, and a 4.18 ERA in June.
The success the left-hander had at the big league level is the most important part. Walter carried a 3.07 ERA over his six appearances while in Boston. While the pitching staff is now overall healthy, having the depth that Walter and Chris Murphy bring is a big boost when an arm goes down.
It remains to be seen which direction the Red Sox turn to on September 1st once MLB rosters expand by two. It is assumed it will be one pitcher and one position player. Walter will be in right at the top of the list for that call up.

Let’s not get too excited about someone who was sent down because Tampa thought he wasn’t getting the job done now all of a sudden he is doing ok at Triple A and he’s going to win the Cy Young Award as soon as he gets promoted once again. The only thing that I enjoy about these articles on the RedSox minor leaguers are the photos that accompanies the article taken by Katie. The articles themselves read like someone trying really really really hard to impress the skybox behind home plate and I don’t mean JH’s.
