The MLB trade market officially at the conclusion of the World Series. It only took three days for the first trade to go down. The Tigers acquired veteran outfielder/first baseman Mark Canha from the Brewers in exchange for minor league right-handed reliever Blake Holub.
The Tigers will be third team in the last two seasons for the veteran Canha. He made his major league debut in 2015 with the Athletics. After the 2021 season, he signed with the Mets for two-years, $26.5 million and then was traded to the Brewers at the 2023 trade deadline.
For 2024, he has a club option for $11.5 million which Detroit intends to pick up according to Jon Heyman of the NY Post. The move will save the Brewers from having to buyout Canha for $2 million.
The 34 year-old righty had his best season in 2019 when he slashed .273/.396/.517 with 26 home runs. Last year between the Mets and the Brewers he maintained to be a productive bat hitting .262 with 62 RBIs. Defensively he was below average resulting in a -1 outs above average, playing the majority of his games in left field.
Holub pitched Low-A and AA baseball last season. The 25 year old made 8 saves with a 3.03 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in 48 relief appearances. He had 18 outings in Low-A and 30 in Double-A. He held opponents to a .226 average with 76 strikeouts in 65.1 innings.
