Three Red Sox players file for free agency
With the World Series officially in the rear view mirror, the offseason is underway. The Red Sox introduced new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow to the media on Thursday, ushering in a new dawn on the franchise.
Following the presser, Breslow made his first move by outrighting right-handed pitcher Justin Garza off the 40-man roster.
In addition, three Red Sox players have also filed for free agency and it’s unlikely any of them will be back in Boston next season.
Starter James Paxton, outfielder Adam Duvall and infielder Adalberto Mondesi elected to file for free agency on Thursday. Only Paxton and Duvall spent time with the Red Sox last season, Mondesi missed the entire season trying to rehab from knee surgery.
Paxton opened the season on the IL for six weeks with a hamstring injury. The southpaw was excellent in the first half of the year, posting a 2.73 ERA before July 15. He struggled to a 7.62 ERA in his last six starts.
Duvall had an interesting season with the Red Sox. After starting out red hot at the plate, the slugger broke his left wrist just eight games into the year.
He suffered the injury when he attempted to make a diving catch on liner that was falling fast in center field. The veteran wound up rolling his left wrist and suffered the fracture.
Duvall appeared in 92 games in total, he clubbed 21 home runs with 58 RBIs, 24 doubles, and a .247/.303/.531 slash line.Â
The Red Sox are in need of some right-handed hitters that can be inserted into the middle of the lineup. Duvall is reportedly looking for an opportunity for additional playing time. If he were to return to the Red Sox, he would likely be in a bench or reserve role.
Mondesi was acquired by the Red Sox back in January from the Royals for left-handed reliever Josh Taylor and a player to be named later.
He missed the entire season trying to rehab from knee surgery and unless Breslow is convinced Mondesi can provide any depth for 2024, his weird tenure with the organization is over and he will be elsewhere next season.
