The coaching carousel is always an anticipated part of the NFL offseason. General manager’s prepare to either be worshiped for hiring the right coach or left in confusion as to why they didn’t get “their” guy.
This offseason happens to feature one of the greatest offensive play-caller minds in the game in Sean Payton. The twist to landing him is it must come in the form a trade.
Payton stepped away prior to last season with the Saints to join FOX Sports on Sundays.
Before stepping away Payton signed a 5-year contract back in 2019 keeping him with the Saints until 2024. Now the veteran coach is leaving his future in general manager Mickey Loomis’ hand.
Could Aaron Rodgers be on the move?
However with all Payton has done for the team, its hard to believe the team plans to steer him in the wrong direction.
The Saints initial ask offer for Payton was a few first round picks. That ask may have changed and with the Saints as they hope to get a fair and equatable return. Other teams have leverage right now but there could be concern that Payton may return to the booth.
With a handful of jobs being open and a few having the trade capital the Saints are hoping for we could see an bump in his market sometime this week.
Payton interviewed with the Texans and Broncos last week. The Super Bowl champion will meet with Denver for a second time and that meeting is planned for this week. In addition, Payton is expected to meet with the Cardinals about their vacancy. He is was slated to interview with Carolina this Friday, unfortunately it was rescheduled due to the passing of Charlotte FC’s Anton Walkes.
First thing is first, wherever he lands the trade partner must be willing to pay the price as well as offer Payton his expected $20-25 million a year, per Jeff Duncan of The Advocate.
The biggest thing to keep an eye on will be where Payton hopes to pick back up in his career. Could it be with Houston and Bryce Young? The Texans have been an organization with little to no history of success similar to his time in New Orleans outside of the history.
Denver has the “it” factor of being the team with better history background and being with John Elway. The only down part will be having the weight of Russell Wilson and possibly saving his career after this past season. The other upside of Denver is having a better defense than what Payton had in his earlier career in New Orleans.
Lastly, the biggest thing some should keep an eye on is the sleeper thought of joining forces with Tom Brady in a place like Carolina. The two had hopes of uniting prior to last season until a few bumps in the road came into play.
