Hello old friend. I’m glad we’re back together again. As most of you know, I covered the Red Sox farm in-depth for Beyond the Monster for a majority of the year in 2022. However, due to mental health reasons and “needing a fresh start”, I stepped away from the site and rebranded and created my own site — none of which are existent right now. I’m fully committed to the Beyond the Monster brand, and I’m overly invested and excited that Chris has welcomed me back with open arms to the site.
You can read a majority of my past work for the site here.
With all that being said, below is my Top 5 Red Sox prospects. Lists 6-10 will be published later this week.
Marcelo Mayer
This should come as no surprise. Mayer has been one of the top prospects in all of baseball for quite some time now. Last season in 66 games for Salem before getting promoted to Greenville, Mayer slashed .286/.406/.504 with nine homers and 40 RBI. In his 25 games with Greenville, Mayer produced a slash line of .265/.379/.449 with four homers and 14 RBI.
Miguel Bleis
Bleis is another must-see prospect in the Red Sox organization. He will start the season off in Salem, but likely will not finish there. He will more than likely see time in Greenville towards the end of the 2023 season campaign, but he, like Mayer and Ceddanne Rafaela, are three players who will make an impact the big league level when their name is called.
Ceddanne Rafaela
I really don’t think there is an more impressive defensive fielding prospect in the Red Sox organization than Ceddanne Rafaela at this current moment. He made the start in Greenville last season but made the jump to Double-A Portland where he really found his bat speed and power. He had 9 homers in Greenville, but had 12 in Portland along with 50 RBI. He slashed .278/.324/.500 with the Sea Dogs, but his defense is what really draws fans to him. Time after time, game after game, it seemed like Rafaela was making some sort of highlight reel tape either in the outfield or infield and for that, he ranks number three. Fully expect to see Rafaela in Triple-A before seasons end.
Bryan Mata
The journey back to the baseball diamond for Bryan Mata has been a long one. He spoke exclusively with BTM last summer about his love for Boston. “I want to win championships. I want to help this team win championships. I just want to show the fans [of Boston] the talent I have,” he said. “I just want that opportunity.” Mata has the flare and potential to be an ace for the Red Sox. If he stays healthy in 2023 do not be surprised to see him make his MLB Debut before the season is over.
Nick Yorke
Nick Yorke spent the entire 2022 season in Greenville where he was able to produce raw power at the plate as he hit 11 homers and 45 RBI in 80 games for the Drive. The one thing that scouts love about Yorke is his patience at the plate. That patience is also a double-edged sword as he struck out right under 100 times last season. He will be leaving his mark on the organization this year.
