Exclusive with Bryan Mata: 'I want to Win Championships with Boston'
Mata made it clear where he stands
Bryan Mata made it very clear to Beyond the Monster that he had one goal in mind while with the Boston Red Sox and it was simple. “I want to win championships. I want to help this team win championships,” he said.
Mata is the Red Sox seventh ranked prospect, and is the second ranked prospect behind recently promoted Brayan Bello who will make his start for the Red Sox on Wednesday against Tampa Bay.
Mata, who has extreme talent, stated that he just wanted to show everyone just how talented he is.
“I just want to show the fans [of Boston] the talent I have,” he said. “I just want that opportunity.”
Mata is coming off an UCL injury that had left him sidelined for a significant amount of time. At first, he was going to elect against surgery, but later underwent season ending Tommy John surgery that shut his 2021 season.
Talking about to the injury, Mata reflected on having the support of his mother. And how swallowing the truth that his season was shut down hurt him.
“The truth was difficult, you know, but thank God my mother was with me during the first 3 months, which were the hardest, said Mata. “I then adjusted to the process, and said “one has to go through this process day by day.”
Mata has made three rehab appearances this season.
He started in Low-A Salem where he worked two innings, striking out two and walking two. He then was assigned to rehab with High-A Greenville where he worked nine innings in three starts and recorded 15 strikeouts and six walks. He was then assigned to Double-A Portland where he’s appeared in two games, one as a starter, and has worked seven and a third innings striking out eight and walking two.
“My arm has felt good and I am getting more comfortable throwing the ball and working my pitches,” Mata said. “I’m ready.”
Mata is ready for the next step which will likely find him in Triple-A Worcester for the remainder of the 2022 season.
If all goes as planned, like it has now, Mata has the ability to be a potential starter in the bigs next season.
