Earlier this week I released my Top 5 prospects with Marcelo Mayer leading the way as the overall number one prospect in the Red Sox organization. Rounding out the Top 10 prospect ranking is Blaze Jordan.
Below is the third of five installments of the prospect rankings as 16-20 will be released later this weekend and 21-30 will be released sometime before Opening Day.
Luis Perales
You can read about why Perales is number 11 on the prospect ranking list here.
Wikelman Gonzalez
Gonzalez had a stellar season last year between Low-Salem and High-A Greenville as he produced 121 strikeouts to 54 walks in 98.1 innings of work. Since signing with the Red Sox in 2018, he has improved his pitching mechanics. As of recent, his fastball has moved from mid-80s to low-to-mid 90s. Gonzalez should start in Greenville, but a promotion to Double-A Portland is definitely not out of the question.
Matthew Lugo
Lugo is another top-tier prospect who could easily make the argument to be ranked higher than where he is in the Top 15, but for right now he’s coming in hot at 13. Fully anticipate later on in the year that Lugo will move up the ladder.
Chris Murphy
Murphy struggled once getting called up to Triple-A Worcester last season going 3-6 with a 5.50 ERA with 58 strikeouts and 41 walks over 75.1 innings of work. He earned the promotion to Triple-A after racing out of the Double-A gates quickly as he earned 91 strikeouts over 76.2 innings of work. Murphy likely won’t see the majors this year, but truth be told, if the Sox need late-season trace bait, Murphy might be the guy.
Nathan Hickey
When you think of great catching prospects Nathan Hickey’s name should always be mentioned. The 23-year-old catcher slashed .263/.415/.522 between Salem and Greenville with 16 homers and 62 RBI. Offensively Hickey has raw, deep power to cover the plate and defensively has a strong cannon to throw out attempted base runners stealing second and sometimes third. Be careful laying down a bunt as he plays his position extremely well.
