SoxSpects Portal: Bello; Walter dominate in Portland Doubleheader
Bello and Walters combined 15 strikeouts for Portland
The Boston Red Sox got great production from their two highly-ranked pitching prospects for Portland on Thursday night. Boston’s number nine prospect and third highest ranked pitching prospect in the farm, Brandon Walter, got the start in game one. Brayan Bello, the number five prospect and the highest ranked pitching prospect in the farm go the start in game two.
*prospect ranks have changed since Duran promotion*
Walter pitched six innings of shut out ball and only allowed three hits while striking out 10 as he earned his first win of the season. He threw 78 pitches, 53 for strike, which was a strike percentage of 67.9. He also lowered his ERA to 0.93.
Bello would have a career night for Portland and it wasn’t because of his five strikeouts. It was the fact that he threw a seven-inning no-hitter. It was the first time in his career doing such a thing. 55 of the 96 pitches thrown were recorded as strikes (57.2%). He would go on to earn his third win of the season and lower his ERA to 1.95.
Now with Jarren Duran called-up to the the majors, the Red Sox top 30 prospect list will look a little different since he has reached his 46th day in the big leagues, according to MLB Pipeline’a Jim Callis.
Although Duran has been promoted back to the bigs, the Red Sox will need to consider their futuristic options with Bello and Walters. At the same time, though, you don’t want to see Boston rush either of them up and ruin a good thing for the future.
Bello has an ETA for 2022, while Walters ETA is scheduled for 2023, both according to MLB Pipeline.
