Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore was stopped by Providence police on Wednesday morning and cited for three traffic violations before his vehicle was towed. He reportedly was cited for operation of an unregistered vehicle, display of plates penalties, and driving with an expired registration.
Barmore took to social media to vent his frustration over the situation with the police.
“I just experienced for the first time 5 Providence cops being very unprofessional racism at its finest,” Barmore posted on X at 1:22 a.m.
According to the police report filed by Providence police, via MassLive.com, Barmore was pulled over at 12:53 a.m. on Wednesday when officers noticed his “vehicle had window tint all around and had a plate cover on the temporary registration, causing issues on reading the information.”
"Barmore's first response was why he was getting stopped, which police then stated was the reason for the traffic stop and our observations,” according to the report. “During this interaction, Barmore had an attitude towards police, and when requested for proper paperwork for the vehicle, he then handed it over in an aggressive manner to police.”
The police said in their report Barmore “proceeded with giving police an attitude and asked for a ticket.” The police allegedly told Barmore following that his vehicle was going to be searched and towed.
“It should be noted that while we were commanding Barmore to step out the vehicle numerous times, police observed him reaching under the seat attempting to conceal an object,” per the report.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said the team is aware of the situation when talking to reporters at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday.
“We’re aware of the situation,” Mayo told reporters. “I had a conversation with him this morning. But like I said, at least for this time here with you guys, I just want to focus on Jacksonville.”
Barmore, 25, is currently on the Patriots reserve/non-football injury list after being diagnosed with blood cots. He also signed a four-year, $84 million extension with the team during the offseason. He led the team in sacks (8.5), quarterback hits (16), and tackles for a loss (13) last season.
Last week, Mayo provided an encouraging update on Barmore’s status, saying he was “progressing.”
The incident involving Barmore comes 10 days after Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers was arrested on three charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. If the allegations surrounding Peppers are true, Patriots owner Robert Kraft vowed the safety would not remain with the organization.
