The Red Sox are expected to sell many of their veterans on the major league roster by the end of the MLB Trade Deadline. Boston has been shopping catcher Christian Vazquez who will be a free agent at the end of the regular season.
Vazquez has been linked to the Houston Astros, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Houston was said to have shown interest in Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras, however the reported asking price is said to be high. Rosenthal has reported that the Astros “are focusing more on Vazquez.”
The current Red Sox backstop has spent his entire career with the organization. He is currently playing out the final year of his contract. Vazquez has stated that he prefers to remain with the club.
“We control what we can control. We’re here fighting together. We are family and we’re going to continue until we see what happens in these couple of days. We’re still here with this uniform and I hope we can stay here.”
Vazquez has also been connected to a rumored trade to the New York Mets. According to Andy Martino of SNY has linked J.D. Martinez and Vazquez to Queens. The Mets are currently balking at the Red Sox asking price for their veterans but the trade deadline is an extremely fluid time.

Wanting to get rid of J.D. is understandable considering his fragile physical state and underwhelming run production this season, but the desire to trade Vazquez is a mystery to me. Isn't he having the best season of his career? Who do we have to replace him if he goes? I get it that he is a free agent but maybe, Red Sox front office, we can play to win this season instead of always looking to the future..
