Reese McGuire activated off IL, homers in return
Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire spent a month on the injured list with a right oblique strain. In his first game back, the left-handed hitter made an impact.
McGuire hit his first homer of the season in the sixth inning off Mariners righty Bryce Miller. The solo blast gave the Red Sox a 6-3 lead.
The Covington, Washington native had his friends and family in the crowd to watch his first game back off the IL.
“LIke a dream come true,” said McGuire postgame to MassLive’s Sean McAdam.
“Coming back to the team and being able to come back to my hometown, and had a bunch of family and friends in attendance. So it was a definitely a special homer there and capping it off with the team win.”
With the return of McGuire, it should ease the amount of playing time for starter Connor Wong, who started 25 of the 31 games during his backup’s absence.
McGuire will give Boston stability from the backup spot where the club didn’t have that while he was out.
Caleb Hamilton and Jorge Alfaro combined to go just 2-for-22 with five strikeouts. Hamilton is back with the WooSox nursing a hand injury and Alfaro was designated for assignment prior to Tuesday night’s game.
