Red Sox designate catcher Jorge Alfaro for assignment
The Red Sox designated catcher Jorge Alfaro for assignment, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. The move makes room for catcher Reese McGuire who was activated off the injured list.
Alfaro was signed in early July after he was released by the Rockies organization. The 30-year-old played in eight games for Boston, including four starts at catcher.
The Columbian native went 2-for-17 with two walks and one hit-by-pitch. He also appeared in 10 games for the Rockies this season, going 5-for-31 with four doubles and one home run.
McGuire landed on the injured list on June 22 with a right oblique strain. He played in a handful of rehab games with Triple-A Worcester, making three starts at catcher and going 2-for-10 with a double, one RBI, and one walk.
Adding McGuire back to the Red Sox roster will help lighten the load off starting catcher Connor Wong, who started 25 of the 31 games during his backup’s absence.
This season, McGuire has hit .267 with nine doubles, 11 RBIs and a .665 OPS in 40 games (29 starts).
