Red Sox' Vaughn Grissom taking it ‘day-by-day’ during rehab assignment
Vaughn Grissom began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Friday night. The infielder is working his way back to the bigs after missing all of spring training with a groin injury.
Grissom is allowed to play 20 games while with the WooSox due to not playing in any spring training games. Since joining Worcester, Grissom has played in three games; he’s been penciled in as the team’s designated hitter. The 23-year-old is 1-for-10 with three strikeouts and is continuing to work on finding his timing at the plate.
"My legs feeling great,” Grissom said before the WooSox home opener on Tuesday night. “My timing is right around where everyone else was in first week of spring training. It is just about getting more at-bats."
Grissom will see time in the infield this week, but his main focus is getting healthy and contributing to the Red Sox in the near future.
"I want to be ready for when I get up to Boston. It seems like they are missing a piece, and I want to be that piece. I want to give them the best version of myself that I can,” said Grissom.
The Red Sox need to be patient with Grissom’s rehab, and they aren’t looking to rush him until he’s ready to contribute to the club.
“We just gotta be patient now,” said Cora. “Just take the right steps, and whenever he’s ready, he’s ready. He’s gonna need a lot,” the Sox skipper cautioned. “No games in spring training; repetitions at second base, obviously... We have to be patient.”
Grissom is focused on being patient and cautioned that he doesn’t want fans to be disappointed if his stint takes longer than it should.
“Just taking it day-by-day,” said Grissom.
