Red Sox trade Luis Urías to the Mariners, acquire right-handed reliever
The Boston Red Sox traded utility infielder Luis Urías to the Seattle Mariners for right-handed reliever Isaiah Campbell, per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.
Urías was a candidate to be non-tendered by the Red Sox prior to the 8 p.m. deadline on Friday.
Urías was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers at the trade deadline for minor league right-handed pitcher Bradley Blalock. The trade was the only move by former chief baseball office Chaim Bloom 2023 deadline.
Splitting between Milwaukee and Boston, Urías struggled offensively hitting a measly .194 at the plate. He managed to produce a bit more for Boston slashing .225/.361/.337, while playing subpar defense.
Urías was projected by MLBTradeRumors to make $4.7 million in arbitration. That number wouldn’t be good value given that he was unable to establish himself as an everyday player after the trade. Boston is currently left with Pablo Reyes, Enmanuel Valdez, and David Hamilton as internal candidates to get time at second base next season.
Campbell is a former second-round pick (2019) who pitched very well as a rookie out of the Mariners’ bullpen in 2023. The right-hander allowed just nine earned runs in 28 2/3 innings (2.83 ERA) while striking out 33 batters.
The 26-year-old will compete for a spot in the Red Sox bullpen next season. He will join Zack Kelly and Nick Robertson as other right-handed options vying for a spot in the bullpen.
Campbell will be placed on the Red Sox 40-man roster, which now stands at 37 platers. The only player that was non-tendered prior to the deadline was reliever Wyatt Mill. The Red Sox tendered contracts to their four remaining arbitration-eligible players, including Reese McGuire and lefty Joe Jacques.
Craig Breslow told reporters that second base is an area he will explore upgrading. The Red Sox have been connected to free agent infielder Whit Merrifield and Yankees’ second baseman Gleyber Torres.
