Andrew Bailey on why he wanted to become a pitching coach: ‘I just love the game’
The Red Sox are close to hiring former Giants pitching coach Andrew Bailey, per The Athletics Ken Rosenthal. Bailey will assume the Red Sox vacant pitching coach role, once held by Dave Bush, who was let go following the conclusion of the regular season.
Bailey emerged as a candidate for the position prior to the club hiring Craig Breslow as the new chief baseball officer. The 39-year-old spent four seasons in the Giants organization, overseeing a major league staff that posted a 3.81 ERA, which was sixth best over that stretch.
Red Sox pitchers posted a 4.57 ERA which was 23rd in the league during that same timeframe.
Boston will now add one of the games top pitching coaches and his connection to Breslow helps bring the former reliever back to Fenway Park.
Bailey’s time as a reliever was cut short due to injuries but despite that, the former right-handed reliever knew he wanted to stay in the game once his playing days were over.
In an interview with the San Francisco Giants back in Aug. 2022, Bailey talked about why he wanted to become a pitching coach.
“I just love the game,” said Bailey in the 2022 interview. “I just want to be a part of it anyway can and unfortunately you know playing career came came to an end because of injuries and had some opportunities to stay in the game in multiple capacities and just thought this would be a cool avenue to try and short time later cat got a call from Captain Farhan and now I'm here so it's been I'm still learning. I'm still growing. It's it's every day is a challenge and it's a lot of fun. I really enjoy it.”
