Red Sox to sign free agent outfielder Adam Duvall (source)
The Red Sox are in an agreement with free agent outfielder Adam Duvall, per source. The deal is for one-year, $7 million that could go as high as $10 million with incentives, per Craig Mish and Jon Heyman.
Boston has been in the market for outfielders this offseason. The move could allow current center fielder Kiké Hernandez to move to shortstop while Trevor Story misses time recovering from elbow surgery.
Duvall makes sense for the Red Sox as he remains one of the few power bats on the free agent market. The 34-year-old slugger is only a year removed from his breakout 2021 season where he crushed 38 homers and drove in 113 RBIs.
The Red Sox have been linked to Duvall for the last couple of weeks. His market has said to be aggressive with multiple offers. Boston presents Duvall the opportunity for regular playing time.
Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has said the club has been in the market to add players to the roster. During Corey Kluber’s press conference, Bloom talked about adding big league talent.
“I would expect we’re going to add,” Bloom said Tuesday. “Frankly, that was my expectation even before this. Whether that’s through free agency or trade, I don’t know yet. What that looks like, who it is, obviously it’s something we were already actively discussing even before this. Now, we’re a man down so we’re going to have to fortify ourselves further.”
The Red Sox added catcher Jorge Alfaro to a minor-league deal on Monday. Alfaro gives the club another catcher option with some power at a cheap price with upside. The veteran catcher does have opt-outs in his minors pact that could allow him to become a free agent in June and July.
Duvall and Alfaro present potential power bats for a roster lacking in that department heading into Spring Training.
Last season, Duvall played in 86 hames for the Braves hitting .230 with a .247 on-base percentage with 61 hits, 12 homers, 36 RBIs, .465 slugging percentage and an 88 wRC+.
