Red Sox sign catcher Jorge Alfaro to minor-league deal
The Red Sox added some depth behind the plate by agreeing to a minor-league deal with catcher Jorge Alfaro, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
Alfaro’s deal does not include a spot on the Red Sox 40-man roster but will get an opportunity to compete for a roster spot.
The Red Sox have only two catchers on the 40-man roster in Reese McGuire and Connor Wong. Unless there is a trade, McGuire seems a lock to make the roster. Wong has one club option remaining which allows the club some flexibility if Alfaro makes the major league roster.
The Colombia native will earn a $2 million base salary if he makes the major league roster. His minor-league pact includes opt-outs on June 1 and July 1. If Alfaro is with Triple-A Worcester, he will have the opportunity to opt-out and pursue a major league job.
The 29-year-old was non-tendered by the Padres this winter after slashing .246/.285/.383 in 82 games. Over his seven-season career which includes stop with the Phillies and Marlins, the righ-thanded hitter has a .256/.305/.396 line across 478 regular-season games.
Alfaro has been locked in at the plate this winter playing for Licey in the Dominican winter league. The slugger hit .383/.471/.633 with 2 HR and 9 RBI in 16 playoff games.
