Red Sox to call up Enmanuel Valdez from Triple-A Worcester, Yu Chang to the paternity list
Boston will place Yu Chang on the paternity list
The Red Sox will call-up infielder Enmanuel Valdez from Triple-A Worcester, per source. The team also announced that infielder Yu Chang has been placed on the paternity list.
Valdez will make his major league debut starting at second base and bat ninth against Twins right-hander Joe Ryan from Fenway Park.
The 24-year-old prospect is ranked as the Red Sox No. 19 prospect according to Baseball America. He was acquired with outfielder Wilyer Abreu from the Houston Astros for catcher Christian Vazquez.
This season with the WooSox, Valdez hasn’t gotten off to good start offensively. In his first 11 games with the WooSox this year, the left-handed hitter has batted just .179 (7-for-39) with three doubles, one home run, six RBIs, three runs scored, one stolen base, six walks, and 15 strikeouts.
Valdez has seen his bat come alive over the last week, including delivering three huge hits, that includes a walk-off single on Saturday against the Columbus Clippers.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora has spoken highly of Valdez since the organization acquired him last season. “He can hit,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Valdez back in February. “This kid, he can hit. He controls the strike zone. He can hit. So we’ll try to help him defensively. More comfortable at second than other places. Both of them, Abreu and Valdez, they control the strike zone. They do damage in the strike zone. I’m excited to see them.”
Valdez’s stint with the Red Sox is not expected to last very long, he is replacing infielder Yu Chang who Boston placed on the paternity list. Chang and his wife Ling are expecting the birth of their second child soon.
The new Sox infielder learned of his call-up on Monday night. Valdez was held back from traveling with the team to Lehigh Valley after the flight was delayed. He then learned that Boston was going to call him up and replace Chang according to the Boston Herald’s Mac Cerullo.
