Red Sox prospect Chase Meidroth is off to a hot start
In the fourth round of the 2022 MLB draft, the Red Sox selected Chase Meidroth with the 129th overall pick. In his first two years in the Red Sox’s system, the Torrance native has been an on-base machine. While the 2023 season is only a few weeks old, Meidroth is showing that his success last year was just the start.
Through his first seven games for Greenville, the 21-year-old has posted a .364 batting average with four runs batted in. While he has shown some power with two extra-base hits, Meidroth’s greatest strength has been his plate discipline. Meidroth has made opposing pitchers use their whole arsenal to get him out whenever he is at the plate. So far this season, he has drawn 11 walks.
During his first few weeks of Single-A ball, the talented infielder has built on his success from his first taste of pro ball. After the draft, Meidroth split time between the FCL and Carolina League, hitting .316 in 22 games. He added four home runs to his resume and showed some speed with four stolen bases.
While Meidroth is not known for his power, his swing produces a lot of line drives in the gap. He has shown strong contact skills regardless of the level and played in the Cape Cod League in 2022 for Yarmouth-Dennis. As he continues to develop, the 21-year-old should see his power numbers slightly increase.
Additionally, he has the ability to play multiple positions. So far this season, he has split time between second and third. While in the Cape Cod League, Meidroth appeared in one game at shortstop. That versatility will be critical as he gets closer to the majors.
Over the next few months, Meidroth will be a prospect to watch. The 2023 campaign is his first full professional season, and his stock will continue to rise if he can keep getting on base. As Meidroth faces more advanced competition, his approach at the plate will be tested. The talented infielder has provided a spark offensively and created optimism for what the future holds.
