Red Sox still need a power bat, team has an offer to Teoscar Hernández
The Red Sox have made a couple of moves but still are in need of more starting pitching and a power bat.
Boston recently acquired infielder Vaughn Grissom from the Braves for Chris Sale and $17 million. The team also signed starter Lucas Giolito to a one-year, $19 million pact.
While adding Giolito makes sense, the righty essentially replaces Sale in the rotation still leaving the Red Sox with the need for more pitching.
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has said his priority is to add starting pitching this winter.
Boston remains connected to Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, but both seem unlikely to be bound for Fenway Park.
The club has been heavily connected to Japanese lefty Shota Imanaga, but the Red Sox seem to be “lurking” for him versus one of the aggressive teams vying for his services, according to per The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.
The trade route still seems to be the most logical path for a starting pitcher. Boston is likely connected to the White Sox’ Dylan Cease, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Justin Turner remains unsigned and the likelihood he returns is seemingly low. Adam Duvall is available and open to a return back to the team. The 35-year-old could be a cheaper alternative and offer flexibility in the outfield and potentially at first base.
Boston has been linked to outfielder Teoscar Hernández and reportedly has a two-year offer extended to the free agent, according to Speier.
Hernández has in the market for a three-year pact. He’s been connected to the Angels and Dodgers in addition to the Red Sox.
Hernández had a decent year at the dish last season, bashing 26 homers with 93 RBIs and mashing 29 doubles for the Mariners. Strike outs are an issue for the slugger, striking out at 31.1 5 clip last season and 29.7% over the course of his career.
The 31-year-old offers an excellent barrel rate at 13.8% which was in the 88th percentile. While playing in Seattle, he struggled offensively at T-Mobile Park slashing .217/.263/.380 slash over 79 games. On the road, his numbers told another story slashing .295/.344/.486 in 81 away games.
Hernández likes to slug at Fenway Park, hitting .282 with 14 homers and a .950 OPS over 45 games at Boston's historic venue in his career.
