After days of anticipation, Lucas Gilito had his first press conference as a member of the Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon. Six days ago, the Red Sox and Giolito agreed on a two-year $ 38.5 million deal that includes an opt-out after the first season. While the 29-year-old made a great first impression, one thing that stood out was his praise for Andrew Bailey.
When talking to the media, Giolito highlighted Bailey as one of the reasons that he signed with Boston. The veteran right-hander said, “ I’m a huge fan of Andrew Bailey, the new pitching coach. I’ve had wonderful conversations with him over the last couple of weeks.”
As Giolito prepares for the next chapter in his career, Bailey will be a key figure in getting him back on track. Last season, the California native was traded three times and posted a 4.88 ERA in 33 games. He also struggled to prevent hard contact and allow a career-high 41 home runs.
While the 2023 campaign was full of ups and downs, Giolito showed he could still be an effective pitcher. In his first 21 starts, he pitched to a 3.79 ERA and recorded six wins. After he was traded to the Angels, he was unable to replicate that success. With the Angels and Indians, he recorded a 2-9 record.
Giolito will be in good hands in Boston as he enters the Bailey pitching lab. Over the last four years, the San Francisco Giants have posted a 3.80 ERA with Bailey as the pitching coach. They only allowed 525 home runs during that span, the fewest in the majors. Bailey also knows what it takes to succeed in one of the most demanding markets in the majors.
Although the start of the season is weeks away, Giolito will be an important piece. He has been an effective pitcher in the majors and sees Boston as a place where he can rebuild his value. With Bailey in his corner, the 2024 campaign could be one of his best.
