The Red Sox signed free agent catcher Roberto Peréz, a two-time Gold Glove winner, to a minor league pact, which will also include an invite to spring training, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
Peréz could earn a $1.4 million base salary if he is added to the major league roster.
Boston showed interest in the veteran catcher last offseason before he signed with the Giants. Peréz played in just five games for San Francisco before a shoulder injury ended his season.
The native of Puerto Rico has only played in 70 games over the last three seasons.
The backstop owns a career a .207 batting average with 55 homers and 193 RBIs. Peréz is known for his Gold Glove awards that he won while a member of the Guardians organization in 2019 and 2020. He threw out 41% of the base stealers (20-of-49) in 2019 and 71% of base stealers (10-of-14) in 2020.
Peréz will add veteran depth at the Triple-A level, filling the void that Jorge Alfaro and Ronaldo Hernández held on the club. He will also compete with Connor Wong and Reese McGuire for a spot on the big league roster.
If Peréz ends up with the WooSox, he will work with Stephen Scott and Elih Marrero for regular playing time. Recent Rule 5 pickup Mickey Gaspar could also see time with Worcester.
