The Boston Red Sox signed right-handed pitcher Cooper Criswell to a one-year, $1 million contract for the 2024 season, the team announced on Wednesday. The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Criswell pitched in 10 games for the Rays last season, all in a relief role. The righty posted a 5.73 ERA over 33 innings (21 earned runs).
Boston will add Criswell to the mix out of the bullpen, he will also occupy a spot on the 40-man roster.
Criswell owns one option, if he doesn’t make the big league roster out of spring training, he’ll provide depth at Triple-A Worcester. The Red Sox are reportedly looking at him to serve as a multi-innings reliever with the ability to spot start.
Last season while pitching for Triple-A Durham, he posted a 3.93 ERA over 84 2/3 innings pitched in 23 games (17 starts).
Criswell is the first major league free agent signing for new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. Up to this point, he’s signed two left-handers to minor league pacts and acquired reliever Isaiah Campbell and outfielder Tyler O’Neill.

A 5.73 ERA for 33 innings is worth a million dollars? smh
