Red Sox sign International high school right-handed pitcher (report)
The Red Sox made a surprise signing on Monday when they agreed to terms with 18-year-old Korean high school pitcher Chan-sol Lee on a minor league deal, per the team’s transactions page.
Lee’s deal with Boston is reportedly with $300K, per KBO Insider Daniel Kim.
The young right-hander was expected to be a first-round pick in the upcoming KBO League draft. Lee will forego his eligibility to play overseas and join the Sox organization.
There’s not much information on the player other than he tops out at 95 mph with his fastball.
Baseball Korea, a publication that covers baseball in his home country, shared the information on Lee’s signing:
“I know that Boston highly evaluated Lee Chan-sol’s growth potential. Also, Seoul High School recently gave a high score to the fact that the training system is comparable to that of the United States. The club made an offer with confidence that he would grow into a top-notch big league player,” per it’s Instagram announcement.
The Sox have signed 18 of their 22 players drafted from the 2023 MLB Draft, including supplemental fourth-round infielder Justin Riemer to a $500K bonus. It’s unclear if the Sox will sign the remainder of their picks. They will have until 5 p.m. on July 25 to sign the remaining players.
