Red Sox sign former Phillies utility player Dalton Guthrie to a minor-league deal
Guthrie is the second member of his family to join the Red Sox organization.
The Red Sox continued to add depth to the upper levels of the minors on Wednesday, signing free agent utility player Dalton Guthrie to a minor-league deal.
Guthrie’s deal is expected to include an invite to spring training. He was assigned to Triple-A Worcester where he will offer skipper Chad Tracy versatility all over the diamond next season.
Guthrie, 28, is a former 2017 sixth-round draft selection of the Phillies who broke into the league with Philadelphia in September 2022.
He played in 14 games for the 2022 National League champions down the stretch. Guthrie went 7-for-21 (.333) with one home run, five RBIs, three runs scored, one stolen base, six walks, and seven strikeouts during that span.
Last season, he opened with season with Philadelphia’s Triple-A affiliate in Lehigh Valley before being called up for the first time in late April. His second stint with the Phillies was not as successful as his first. He went 4-for-24 (.167) with one double, four runs scored, three walks, and seven strikeouts over 23 games.
The Phillies would designate Guthrie for assignment in June and was dealt to the Giants for cash considerations. His time with San Francisco’s organization was short-lived. He played in nine games for their Triple-A affiliate before being designated for assignment and ultimately claimed off waivers by the Braves.
While with the Braves’ top minor league affiliate, he slashed .271/.363/.345 with five doubles, one triple, two homers, 22 RBIs, 21 runs, three stolen bases and 45 strikeouts in 49 games.
Guthrie offers versatility on the defensive side of the ball, starting games at second base, third base, shortstop, left field, center field and right field. The 5-foot-11, 160-pounder has two minor league options remaining, likely competing for a bench spot with the Red Sox when spring training begins later this month.
Guthrie will be the second member of his family to join the Red Sox organization. His father Mark, a left-handed pitcher, signed with the Red Sox for the 1999 season. His dad also won a World Series with the 1991 Minnesota Twins team.
