Red Sox lose two pitchers off waivers following DFAing them last week
The Red Sox lost two pitchers just a week ahead of spring training.
Boston lost two right-handed pitchers Zack Weiss and Max Castillo to waiver claims Wednesday, the club announced. The Twins claimed Weiss while Castillo was claimed by the Phillies.
The Red Sox designated both pitchers for assignment last week to make room for infielder Romy Gonzalez who was claimed off waivers from the White Sox. The club also acquired catcher Tyler Heineman from the Mets for cash considerations on Friday.
Weiss, 31, has pitched for the Reds and Angels and in a small sample size for the Red Sox at the end of last season.
The righty pitched six games after being claimed from Los Angeles on Aug. 25, he posted a 2.08 ERA and struck out eight batters in 8 2/3 innings. Last season, he had a 5.44 ERA while striking out 56 batters and walking 26 batters in 41 1/3 frames with the WooSox (between Salt Lake and Worcester).
Castillo was claimed off waivers from the Royals on Jan. 2. He pitched in 21 games (six starts) with the Blue Jays and Royals and owns a 5.43 ERA with 47 punch outs ov er 59 2/3 frames.
The 24-year-old pent the majority of last season pitching for the Royals Triple-A affiliate in Omaha. He posted a 6-7 record with a 4.58 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 116 innings over 22 appearances, making 21 starts. He also has tossed quality innings during winter ball this year for his native Venezuela.
Castillo went 5-0 with a 2.72 ERA in 11 games, 49 2/3 innings pitched.
Entering into the 2023 season, Castillo was ranked as the No. 23 prospect in their system by Baseball America. The righty was projected to provide the Red Sox depth as a starter in Worcester this coming season. The Red Sox could potentially bring Castillo back on a minors pact, but he will need to clear waivers, until then, the club has seven days to trade, release or waive Castillo.
