Red Sox select high school shortstop Cutter Coffey with the No. 41 pick
The Red Sox used the pick they got back after Jud Fabian refused to sign last year and used it to select high school shortstop Cutter Coffey.
The 6-foot-2 infielder played shortstop in high school but projects more as a third baseman at the professional level.
The Bakersfield, California native committed to Texas University but with a $1.91 approximate pick value, it’s likely he will sign with Boston.
According to PerfectGame.org, Coffey has a “very Very athletic build with some present strength and room for plenty more. 6.89 runner in the sixty, speed plays up in the games, especially on defense, quick footwork in the middle of the field, works through the ball very well, quick release on his throws, plenty of raw arm strength. Right handed hitter, hits from a wide base with a hanging leg lift load, aggressive hitter who attacks balls, looking to pull the ball hard, has barrel whip, good game swings. Two-way prospect on the mound, rotational delivery with a mid 3/4's arm slot. Fastball topped out at 91 mph, has regularly been up to 93 mph this summer, sweeping slider was a solid second pitch.”
Coffey was ranked No. 105 overall by MLB.com will join new Red Sox prospect Mikey Romero who was selected at No. 24 in the first round.
