Red Sox release struggling pitcher from Triple-A Worcester, officially announce Zach Penrod promotion
The Red Sox are releasing right-handed pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez and will officially promote left-hander starter Zach Penrod to Triple-A Worcester.
Boston acquired Gutierrez from the Brewers on April 19, after he was designated for assignment. The native of Cuba pitched in just five games for the WooSox and struggled, posting a 9.00 ERA with eight strikeouts and eight walks in eight innings.
The Red Sox had already previously designated Gutierrez for assignment on May 1st after signing first baseman Dominic Smith.
Gutierrez struggled to throw strikes and keep the ball in the zone while pitching in Worcester.
Penrod is officially added to the WooSox roster after dominating Double-A lineups this season. The 26-year-old went 4-0 in seven starts for the Sea Dogs with 53 strikeouts while posting a 1.02 WHIP in 35 1/3 innings.
He has struck out 29 of the last 69 batters he has faced, dating back to May 12.
Penrod will join the WooSox rotation, which includes the likes of righties Richard Fitts, Grant Gambrell, Jason Alexander, Josh Winckowski, and Naoyuki Uwasawa.
The southpaw is officially knocking on the door of the big leagues but will need to show that same dominance and consistency in Worcester like he has at each level of the Red Sox organization.
