Red Sox prospect Tyler Miller rewarded for his impressive start at the plate
After a hot start at the plate, Red Sox prospect Tyler Miller was rewarded for his play on Monday. The former ninth-round pick was promoted to the Portland Sea Dogs, according to MiLB Central reporter Chase Ford. Against more advanced competition, Miller will be looking to build on his success.
In 36 games for Greenville this season, Miller was one of their best bats. He posted a .275 batting average and showed some power. So far this season, 14 of his 36 hits have gone for extra bases. That is an encouraging sign after Miller recorded 33 extra-base hits in 91 games during the 2023 campaign. However, what has stood out is his ability to get on base.
Through 131 at-bats, Miller has posted a .321 on-base percentage, the second-highest total of his career. While he is only hitting .257 this month, he has drawn more walks than in April and recorded four multi-hit games. When he is not making an impact at the plate, Miller has added value with his versatility.
The former Auburn star has committed six errors while splitting time between first and third. He has added 40 assists to his resume and turned 16 double plays. While all of his playing time this year has come in the infield, Miller did make some appearances in the outfield last year.
As Miller prepares for a new challenge, he has shown that he can make adjustments. In his second stint with Greenville this year, his average was 12 points higher. He has also looked more like the player who hit .307 in the FCL in 2021. The key for Miller is getting on base and taking advantage of pitches he can hit. If he can do that, his stock should continue to rise as he moves closer to the majors.
Miller has been a productive hitter in the minors and could be a bench piece in the majors if he can hold his own against better pitching.
