Red Sox prospect Justin Riemer joins “To the Show We Go” podcast; 'I’ve always prided myself in putting the ball in play hard and trying to get on base'
The Red Sox drafted infielder Justin Riemer out of Wright State University. Riemer was the first Raider picked in the 2023 MLB Draft.
Riemer was drafted 133rd overall as the compensation pick for losing starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi to the Rangers in the offseason.
The 21-year-old shortstop and second baseman had a chance to be drafted on Day 1, but slipped due to tearing his ACL in March, only 12 games into his redshirt sophomore season.
At the time of his injury, Riemer as red hot at the plate, batting .323 (10-for-31) with a .563 on-base percentage, three homers, seven RBIs, 12 runs and three steals. He also showed an impressive eye at the plate, walking 15 times to just two strikeouts.
“I’ve mostly been a contact guy,” said Riemer while on the To the Show We Go podcast. “I’ve always prided myself in putting the ball in play hard and trying to get on base and setting the table for my teammates.
“It’s something that’s always been a part of my game, the last few years at Wright State, I developed a little bit more, where I wasn’t just hitting it for contact. I was able to let my swing loose a little bit more.”
Wright State had 18 players drafted over the last nine drafts, dating back to 2015 and 42 total players in program history.
