Red Sox promote southpaw from Triple-A Worcester and make a series of roster moves ahead of Padres series
The Red Sox made three roster moves on their off day Thursday, ahead of a three-game series against the Padres.
Boston activated catcher Connor Wong, who had been on the paternity list for the last three days. He will be active for the series opener on Friday. The Red Sox also optioned catcher Tyler Heineman and right-handed pitcher Isaiah Campbell to Triple-A Worcester.
With Campbell heading back to the minors, Boston will recall left-handed pitcher Bailey Horn, according to Beyond the Monster’s Andrew Parker.
The 26-year-old was acquired from the White Sox back in late April after he was designated for assignment. He is the first pitcher the Red Sox acquired that was with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow when they were both in the Cubs organization.
“I was with him with the Cubs, and everything we did over there was awesome,” Horn said about his familiarity with Breslow. “He does a great job as far as development goes and helping everyone become their best. He is great, and every interaction I have had with him has been awesome. I am super grateful to be back in his organization.”
Since he was acquired, Horn has pitched to a 1.69 ERA, allowing just three runs in 16 frames while allowing just nine hits and recording 19 strikeouts.
“Horn has power stuff but is not quite consistent with it. His fastball sits at 94–96 mph, touches 98, and gets swings and misses when he throws it over the plate,” Baseball America wrote. “His sharp, 84-86 mph slider flashes plus and is a wipeout offering at its best. His big-breaking 75-79 mph curveball with sweep and depth is an above-average pitch that he can land on the back foot of righties. Horn has plenty of stuff, but he struggles to repeat his delivery and has a violent arm action that yields well below-average control and significant injury risk.
“Horn’s power stuff makes him a potential low-leverage relief option. His major league debut should come in 2024.”
