WooSox release hard-throwing reliever after posting 11.88 ERA
The WooSox released hard-throwing right-handed reliever Melvin Adón on Tuesday after posting an 11.88 ERA in seven games.
Adón, who had been on the WooSox development list, struggled on the mound, specifically throwing strikes in the zone. He had been working with WooSox pitching coach Dan DeLucia and bullpen coach Noah Junis multiple times a week, throwing bullpen sessions that were focused on strike throwing, according to skipper Chad Tracy.
“We all know his stuff is off the charts good; he throws 97-98 mph and up to 100 mph, has a good slider, and has been working on a cutter,” said Tracy. “There’s a lot of things he has, but when he’s out there, he needs to consistently command the zone and not let innings blow up on him.”
Adón offers a plus-fastball and a slider in his pitch mix. His slider has been his best pitch, generating swing-and-misses when on the mound. As Tracy mentioned in his media scrum, Adón was also working on adding a cutter to his arsenal.
Before signing with the Red Sox this offseason, Adón had spent his entire professional career in the Giants organization. He was once considered a top prospect, ranking as high as No. 15 overall with MLB Pipeline (2019).
Adón has had struggles over the course of his career, and more so since the automated strike zone was implemented in minor league baseball.
