Red Sox promote prospect Ceddanne Rafaela and others in a series of roster moves
The Red Sox announced a series of roster moves that includes recalling top prospect Ceddanne Rafaela from Triple-A Worcester.
The 22-year-old Rafaela has been scorching hot for the WooSox since his promotion from Double-A. The electric outfielder is hitting .312/.370/.618 with 14 home runs in 48 games for Triple A Worcester. He was promoted from the Sea Dogs back in June and has been paying off dividends for Worcester.
The No. 3 prospect will provide the Red Sox with outfield depth while Jarren Duran is on the IL and Wilyer Abreu is out of action due to the birth of his first born child.
In addition to adding Rafaela, the Red Sox will add infielder David Hamilton and right-handed hurler Kyle Barraclough from Triple-A Worcester. Abreu has been placed on the Paternity list, after his wife gave birth to their first child on Monday. Infielder Pablo Reyes will also be placed on the injured list with an elbow injury. Reyes sustained the injury during Saturday afternoon’s game against the Dodgers.
Barraclough will make get his second stint with the Red Sox this season. He was last recalled on Aug. 9 and spent four days with the club before being optioned back to the WooSox.
Boston signed Barraclough out of Indy baseball following the release of controversial lefty Matt Dermody was released.
“The goal was to get out of Indy ball and back into affiliate ball.” Barraclough said to Beyond the Monster his first day in Worcester back in June. “I got contacted on Saturday that the Red Sox were interested. I was surprised how quickly it developed because I was supposed to start there that weekend. I packed up the car on Sunday and drove halfway and the other half Monday.”
The veteran righty pitched in two games for the Sox, posting a 1-0 record with a 2.70 ERA in 3 1/3 innings. He’s been stellar with the WooSox, posting an 8-0 record in 10 games (nine starts) with a 2.43 ERA, 41 strikeouts and a 0.99 WHIP in 55 2/3 innings.
“I feel I am bringing a lot of experience.” Barraclough added. “I have been around a lot the past couple of years. I will be someone who goes out there and competes and tries to win each at-bat.”
Hamilton will provide infielder depth with Reyes on the IL. The speedy infielder can play both second base and shortstop, he has also seen time in center field while with the WooSox.
The 25-year-old is hitting .243 with 82 hits, 15 homers, 47 RBI and has an impressive 49 stolen bases this season. He’s had 29 at-bats with the Red Sox this season, he has four hits (.138 batting average) and two stolen bases.
Abreu got off to a hot start in the big leagues, posting a 1.068 OPS with a homer and five RBI in his first 19 plate appearances.
