Red Sox promote outfield prospect Nelly Taylor to High-A Greenville, collects three hits in debut
The Red Sox promoted outfield prospect Nelly Taylor from Low-A Salem to High-A Greenville, as first reported by Ian Cundall and Chris Hatfield of SoxProsepcts.com.
Taylor made his Drive debut on Tuesday night, batting fifth and was the team’s designated hitter. The 21-year-old went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI, and one strikeout.
The athletic outfielder is in his first full professional season after he was selected in the 11th round of the 2023 MLB draft out of Polk State College (Winter Haven, Fla.).
In 101 games for the Salem Red Sox this season, Taylor slashed .228/.336/.358/.694 with 24 doubles, three triples, six home runs, 46 RBIs, 69 runs scored, 31 stolen bases, and 60 walks.
During his first professional season, Taylor has made the most of his opportunities in Single-A while adjusting to a new level and routine.
“Some of the biggest adjustments I’ve had to make have been weight management,” said Taylor in an interview with Beyond the Monster in July. “I’m the type of guy who burns a lot of calories and loses weight fast. I had to make the adjustment and teach myself to do as much as I could, as often as I could. Also, with this being the most games I’ve ever played in a season, I’ve had to dig deep mentally and physically and have a day-to-day routine.”
On the defensive side of the ball, Taylor has seen time at all three outfield spots. He has also been penciled in as a designated hitter for Salem this season. On the defensive side of the ball, Taylor has seen time at all three outfield spots. Taylor underwent surgery to remove a Wilms tumor on his kidney when he was five years old. He learned off his tumor after being tackled by his cousin and credits him for saving his life.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder has plus raw power, according to his SP scouting report. He is considered an impressive athlete with strong raw offensive tools.
