Red Sox promote former first-rounder to Double-A Portland, leads off in team debut
The Red Sox promoted former first round pick Mikey Romero to Double-A Portland on Sunday, as first reported by MiLB Central’s Chase Ford.
Romero, who is currently the No. 14 ranked prospect in the Red Sox system according to Baseball America.
The left-handed hitting 20-year-old batted .271/.319/.498 with 20 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs, 40 RBIs, 40 runs scored, one stolen base, and 16 walks in 59 games for Greenville this season.
His strong season at the plate also included South Atlantic League Player of the Week honors, or the week of July 29–August 4.
Romero is in his second full season of pro baseball, coming back from a back issue that shut him down last August. The Orange Lutheran High School (Orange, Calif.) product completed a three-game rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League before rejoining Greenville in mid-May. From there, Romero has been locked in, providing a spark in the Drives’ lineup.
The 20-year-old talented infielder knows what he is capable of, his potential, and his growth as a person on and off the baseball field.
“I know what I'm capable of doing,” said Romero on The Pesky Report Podcast, presented by Beyond the Monster. “As far as the injuries, I've just, I've grown so much just as a person, just in my faith and my and in just everything, every aspect of life. I've grown a lot as a person.
“I wouldn't want it any other way because I know that for the rest of my career, the routine that I have daily now to get ready to play baseball is going to be something that I do for the next, however many, hopefully very long years that I'm playing. I mean, it was frustrating just because, you know, I know what I'm capable of doing on the field.”
Romero made his Double-A debut on Tuesday night for the Sea Dogs and notched his first hit. He finished the game 1-for-5 with two RBI out of the leadoff spot for the Sea Dogs.
On the defensive side, Romero made a fielding error in the game. This season, the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder logged 307 2/3 innings at short and 134 innings at second, all while committing eight errors in 179 total chances. He also started eight games at DH.
Prior to his promotion to the Sea Dogs, Romero had spent time on the injured list with a concussion. He took a bad hop to the face in the infield but returned to action on August 14.
With the likes of Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, Kyle Teel, and Kristian CampbelL promoted to the WooSox, it gave Romero an opportunity at the Double-A level.
