Red Sox rookie outfielder Wilyer Abreu ejected for arguing balls and strikes Monday night
The Red Sox lost a key member of their lineup on Monday night after right fielder Wilyer Abreu was ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
Abreu was tossed out of the game by home plate umpire Paul Clemons after he was struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch by the Blue Jays’ José Berríos. While it’s not known what pitch Abreu was upset over, it’s possible he was miffed about the fourth pitch in the at-bat, a 3-0 sinker for Berríos.
Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas, the next hitter after Abreu, singled to left field to knock in Jarren Duran and give Boston a 1-0 lead at the time.
The Blue Jays exploded to a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning, largely due to a George Springer three-run homer off Red Sox hurler Brad Keller that wrapped around the Pesky Pole in right field.
Abreu finished the game 0-for-2 with two strikeouts. Following his ejection, Rob Refsnyder came into the game and was moved to left field, while Tyler O’Neill took over in right field. Refsnyder takes over in the second spot in the order for Abreu.
This is the first time that Abreu has been ejected from a game in his big league career.
The 25-year-old rookie is batting .266 with 14 homers, 27 doubles, two triples, 50 RBI, and 52 runs with a .833 OPS in 103 games this year.
