Red Sox place another starting pitcher on the injured list and recall reliever from Triple-A Worcester
Another day, another article talking about a Red Sox player landing on the injured list.
The Red Sox placed right-handed pitcher Brayan Bello on the 15-day IL with right lat tightness. The move is retroactive to Sunday, which means the right-hander would be eligible to return on May 7.
Boston recalled Zack Kelly from Triple-A Worcester to fill Bello’s spot on the active roster.
Bello’s last start came against the Pirates at PNC Park last Friday. The righty tossed six scoreless frames and struck out seven batters in the win. This season, the 24-year-old is 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA in 26 2/3 innings and 26 strikeouts in five starts.
According to WEEI’s Rob Bradford, Bello first felt discomfort in his lat in Boston and then pitched through in against the Pirates.
The injury to Bello now puts 60% of the Red Sox starting rotation on the IL. Lucas Giolito, Nick Pivetta, and Garrett Whitlock are all out for either the season or the foreseeable future.
Kelly opened the season with the WooSox and has been solid out of the bullpen. He’s allowed no runs and one hit through nine innings. The righty has struggled with walks, allowing eight free passes, but has struck out 10 batters.
Bello was expected to start for the Red Sox in the series finale against the Guardians on Thursday. Alex Cora has not yet named a starter in place of Bello. Internal options are running thin, but the Red Sox could call up recently claimed righty Vladimir Gutierrez. He made his WooSox debut this weekend, walking three in his only inning of work.
