Connor Wong off to a strong start at the plate
Through the first few weeks of the 2024 campaign, the Red Sox offense has shown it has plenty of talent to compete. During their rollercoaster start, one player who has been a hits machine is Connor Wong. While splitting time behind the plate with Reese McGuire, the former third-round pick has been a force at the plate.
During the Red Sox’s 13-10 start, Wong has posted a .349 batting average in 44 plate appearances. He has shown some power with three home runs, which rank third on the team. The Texas native has also added four multi-hit games to his resume.
While his sample size is small, Wong has not needed to be a home run threat to make an impact. Only four of his 15 hits have gone for extra bases. Regardless of where he is in the lineup, Wong is taking advantage of his opportunities and using the entire field. His success has partly been due to the work he put in during the offseason.
“He’s made adjustments,” manager Alex Cora told MLB.com’s Ian Browne during spring training . “It started towards the end of the [2023] season. And in the offseason, [hitting coach] Pete [Fatse] came down here to Fort Myers. They started cleaning up a few things with the leg kick and all that.”
Although Wong is not expected to hit over .300 all season, he has been a reliable bat and has come through in clutch situations. In a lineup that has been without key pieces due to injuries, Wong has been a bright spot while playing good defense.
As the Red Sox look to build on their recent success, Wong will be an important piece. He has shown a knack for getting on base and provided a little power. That will be key in the coming weeks with Triston Casas on the injured list and Rafael Devers not at 100 percent.
