Red Sox pitcher Bryan Mata continues to be snakebitten by 'all of these weird injuries'
Red Sox pitcher Bryan Mata will miss more time after experiencing lat soreness following his latest rehab outing for Double-A Portland on Thursday.
Boston initially announced Mata’s injury as shoulder soreness, but the right-hander told reporters on Saturday the issue is primarily in his lat.
“The arm is good,” Mata said through translator Daveson Pérez on Saturday to reporters. “It’s just the lat. So we’re just going to get that checked out.”
The 25-year-old, who is on the Red Sox 40-man roster and is out of minor league options, has been on the injured list all season dealing with a right hamstring strain. Mata was eligible to come off the IL on June 12, and the Red Sox would have to add him to the 26-man roster, designate him for assignment, or trade him.
“It’s been really tough dealing with all of these weird injuries that have been happening to me,” Mata said. “All I can control is working hard like I have been. That’s something that’s out of my control. But yeah, it’s definitely tough.”
Mata pitched three innings for the Sea Dogs, allowing three runs and five hits while striking out two. It was his third rehab outing, following appearances for the FCL Red Sox and the Greenville Drive. It’s likely now that Mata will be pulled off his rehab assignment, according to Alex Cora.
“While I was pitching, I felt great,” Mata said. “Everything that the team had told me to do and work on, I was working on it actively. I felt good on the mound. It was only after I pitched that I started feeling stuff. While I was pitching, I didn’t feel anything.”
