Red Sox trade infielder to the Mets for cash considerations
The Red Sox traded infielder Pablo Reyes to the Mets for cash on Saturday, per source.
Boston designated Reyes for assignment on April 29 to clear a roster spot and create room for first baseman Garrett Cooper.
Reyes had been struggling with the Red Sox dating back to last season, slashing just .183/.234/.217 with a 29.7% strikeout rate in his first 64 plate appearances, per FanGraphs.
While with the WooSox, Reyes played in just five games, hitting .462 with one homer, four RBI, and three stolen bases with a 1.280 OPS.
On Friday afternoon, Reyes had been working out at second base with coaches at Polar Park. The 30-year-old’s versatility offered value to the roster, being able to play each infield position and some outfield.
This is now the second time that Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns has acquired Reyes, as Reyes signed a minor league deal with the Brewers in January 2021 when Stearns was still leading Milwaukee’s front office.
Reyes is out of minor league options, and the Mets will need to keep him on the active roster unless he is designated off the 40-man roster.
