Red Sox option pitcher to Triple-A Worcester to make room for Garrett Whitlock
The Red Sox made another roster move on Tuesday morning, optioning right-handed pitcher Kutter Crawford to Triple-A Worcester, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
The move allows the Red Sox to add righty Garrett Whitlock to the 26-man roster. Whitlock will pitch for the Red Sox on Tuesday night against the Rays in St. Petersburg.
Crawford started on Sunday against the Tigers earning his first win of the season. The 27-year-old pitched 5 innings, allowing one run, giving up five hits with six strikeouts in the win.
“I think I executed better, and I think being able to pitch off my fastball, using my fastball more kind of opened up things and I was able to kind of move it around the zone, up, down, in and out, kind of really opened up more options for me later in the count,” Crawford said to reporters.
The 6-foot-1, 210 pound righty had two minor league options, making him a logically choice to be sent to Worcester. Boston could have optioned Kaleb Ort, he has two minor league options remaining. Ryan Brasier was another option, he has no minor league options remaining.
The move allows Crawford to remain stretched out as a starter for when he is recalled again by the team.
Crawford has made two starts for the club this season, earning a 1-1 record, 8.00 ERA, 112 strikeouts with a 1.67 WHIP over nine innings.
