Red Sox option Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester, call-up lefty reliever
The Red Sox made two roster moves on Monday, optioning starting pitcher Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester and recalled left-handed reliever Brennan Bernardino.
Boston has been utilizing six starters the last two turns through the rotation. It appears that the club has decided to return to a traditional five man rotation.
Bello pitched for the Red Sox on Sunday against the Brewers allowing three runs, five hit and two walks while striking out three in 4 2/3 innings. He has struggled in his first two starts to begin the season, allowing eight runs, 13 hits (two homers) and three walks while striking out eight in 7 ⅓ innings.
Bernardino made his WooSox debut on Friday, pitching two scoreless innings and picking off a runner at first. The Red Sox acquired the southpaw off waivers from the Mariners after they placed Zack Kelly on the 60-man injured list.
The 31-year-old has made two major league appearances, both with Seattle. He allowed one earned run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings during his brief stint in the big leagues.
Bello is still with the Red Sox in Baltimore as the team begins a three game series against the Orioles.
