Red Sox manager Alex Cora provides new update on Justin Turner
Justin Turner is doing well and in good spirits, according to Red Sox manager Alex Cora. The new Red Sox designated hitter is working his way back to regular baseball action following being hit in the face by a pitch on Monday.
“We’re taking it day by day,” Cora said Friday morning. “We have plenty of time. The hope is for him to be with us right away. He’s in good spirits.”
Boston is confident that Turner will be ready by Opening Day on March 30. The 38-year-old is going to get some at-bats in minor-league games and live batting practices, per Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe. He will not return to action until he gets his 16 stitches removed, Cora believes that could happen next week.
Turner has been doing some low intensity cardio in the effort to keep him active.
“He walked on the treadmill yesterday and felt good,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters, including Ian Browne on Friday. “Same deal today. Just add a little bit more and take it day-by-day.”
To begin the spring, Turner has appeared in six Grapefruit League games. The right-handed hitter has gone 3-for-12 (.250) with one RBI, four runs scored, one walk, and one strikeout in that stretch.
