The Red Sox started a three game series with the Oakland Athletics on Friday night.
The Sox activated shortstop Yu Chang, he was in the lineup for the first time since he broke his hamate bone on April 24th.
Chang immediately paid off dividends plating two runs during the Sox five-run second inning of their 7-3 win over the Athletics.
Boston also has activated James Paxton from the Paternity leave and he is scheduled to start on Saturday in the second game of this series.
To make room for Chang and Paxton, the Sox optioned infielder David Hamilton back to Triple-A Worcester and placed right-handed reliever Kaleb Ort to the IL with right elbow inflammation.
Left-handed reliever Ryan Sheriff was designated for assignment, allowing the Sox to move Chang off the 60-day IL.
Hamilton struggled offensively and defensively in his first run at the big leagues hitting a mere .138 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Sherriff’s DFA was a bit surprising, he was good in a small sample size posting a 2.70 ERA in six and 2/3 innings. Other lefty relievers such as Chris Murphy and Brennan Bernardino have emerged making him expendable. Ort has been ineffective as he has gotten scored upon in four of his last six outings.
Chang provides Boston a reliable defensive glove in the field with occasional pop at the plate. He is not known for his bat at all, but he had three home runs in his last eight games in April.
The 27-year-old was named the starting shortstop by manager Alex Cora prior to being activated off IL.
