In spring training, Red Sox fans will get a preview of the future. The list of non-roster players who received an invite was released on Friday. The list included three of the team's top 30 prospects: Nick Yorke, Chase Meidroth, and Nathan Hickey. While the talented trio is not expected to make the opening-day roster, they will be watched closely.
Of the three, Yorke has received the most attention in the minors. He is ranked as the organization's sixth-best prospect according to MLB.com and coming off one of his most productive seasons. During the 2023 campaign, the California native appeared in a career-high 110 games and drove in 61 runs. He also showed some power, as 43 of his 119 hits went for extra bases.
Like Yorke, Meidroth could be a key part of the Red Sox infield's future. The talented third baseman drove in a career-high 57 runs last season between two levels. He also showed excellent plate discipline by drawing 80 walks. The former fourth-round pick has posted a .278 batting average through his first two years in the minors.
Rounding out the list is Nathan Hickey, who has terrorized pitchers with his power. While splitting time between High-A and Double-A last season, he crushed 19 home runs. The talented catcher added 24 doubles to his resume while receiving a bump in playing time.
While they are not the only prospects who will be in camp, Yorke, Hickey and Meidroth have higher expectations. They are also inching closer to the majors as all three finished the 2023 campaign in Double-A.
Regardless of how spring training plays out, Red Sox fans now have an additional reason to keep track of what is going on in Fort Myers once games begin.
