Red Sox have been ‘in touch’ with former Cubs reliever
The Red Sox have are keeping tabs on a former Cubs pitcher that chief baseball officer Craig Breslow worked with while in Chicago. Boston has reportedly “stayed in touch” with right-handed reliever Codi Heuer, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
Heuer is currently rehabbing from having surgery last June to repair a fractured elbow. The right-hander also missed the 2022 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his elbow.
Heuer suffered the injury while rehabbing in the minors last year. The Cubs were in the final stages of his overall rehab assignment, hoping the righty could get his command back before returning to the major league roster.
The reported recovery for his broken elbow offers a less definite timeline for this injury. The recovery process requires immobilization, which delays in the rehab process. His UCL was not injured when he broke his elbow but he had screws and wires put in to hold everything in place.
The 27-year-old was a sixth-round pick by the White Sox back in 2018. He was traded from the Southside to the Cubs with infielder Nick Madrigal in 2021 for closer Craig Kimbrel.
Heuer had made his MLB debut in posting a 1.52 ERA over 23 2/3 relief innings for the White Sox in 2020,. His 2021 numbers took a nosedive from the previous season, with 4.28 ERA over 67 1/3 total innings with the White Sox and Cubs.
The Montana native offers a three pitch mix, a four-seam heater that hits 95 mph, a slider and changeup. During his time in the bigs, Heuer’s changeup and slider have been his most effective pitches, limiting opponents to a batting average below the Mendoza line.
The Cubs non-tendered Heuer back in November making him a free agent. The right-hander has begun to throw this month and is an intriguing option to stash with the WooSox before adding him to the bullpen.
